The undefeated 2020 State Champs Windsor Greyhounds played the 9-3 Thayer Bobcats in the quarter-finals, Saturday, Nov. 20 on the road. They played valiantly but could not overcome the very strong Bobcats and came up short 30-22. The Hounds have been 37-4 over the last three seasons, something to be proud of. Windsor and Thayer faced each other in last year’s semifinals where the Greyhounds won dramatically 14-12.
1ST QUARTER: The Bobcats, led by Jackson Willison, scored on their first two possessions using their ground game and an occasional pass. The Greyhounds only managed two punts. It was clear the Bobcat defense was keying on Dalton Witherspoon. The quarter ended 14-0 Bobcats.
2ND QUARTER: The Greyhound defense, led by Kaleb Eaton and Marshall Mankini and Craig Parker, forced the Bobcats to punt twice and gave up an interception to Dylan Witherspoon. The Hounds, with Dylan at QB started to find ways to move the ball more effectively. The Hounds scored with 3:32 left in the half from a 27 yard run from Dalton Witherspoon. The half ended 14-8 Thayer.
3RD QUARTER: Windsor started with the ball and used an exciting fake punt to extend the drive, but later the Hounds turned the ball over on downs. The Bobcats’ offensive line dominated on their next drive of 70 yards. They scored and made it 22-8 with 2:19 left in the quarter. The pressure was on the Hounds and they responded with a TD from Dylan Witherspoon. This made it close again at the end of the quarter, 22-16 Thayer. The fans knew that the Greyhounds were a fourth quarter team, but the Bobcats still seemed to be in control of the game.
4TH QUARTER: Thayer once again marched down the field using a Greyhound penalty and got near the goal line. Time was obviously becoming a factor. The Hounds put up a great goal line stand and stopped the Bobcats. Windsor players to note in this game are: Corbin Terry, Dylan White, JJ Hall and Dustin Johnson. The Greyhounds could not move the ball and where forced to go on 4th and 5 deep in their own territory. They came up short. With great field position and less than two minutes to play Thayer scored and made it 30-16. The Greyhounds, on their next possession were frustrated and got two unsportsmanlike penalties. Within a fury of other penalties the Greyhounds moved the ball into the red zone and with great pass plays scored with 41 seconds left and made it 30-22. Greyhounds are known for their speed, but these Greyhounds should also be known for their fight. The last chance on-side kick did not work. The Windsor Greyhound’s great season ended.
The support for the Greyhounds has been amazing. Not just in Windsor but throughout the region. The Thayer Bobcats move on to play E. Buchanan, Saturday, Nov. 27 in the State semifinals. Buchanan beat Penny 22-12 to stay alive.
