Lady Cards Season Ends In District Semis

The 2022 Lady Cards soccer team made history this season but they could not beat the Logan-Rogersville Wildcats in the semifinals of the District Tournament on Tuesday, May 17.
The Wildcats started with most of the attacks but the Lady Cards weathered the storm and started their own.
A Wildcat striker broke through the Cardinal backline at the 31-minute mark to make it 1-0. Later the Wildcats took a ‘short corner’ that surprised the Clinton defense and they went up 2-0. Yet, the Cards had the majority of the ball possession and the attacks, but could not get anything to go.
For example, Mercedez Brown took a shot from the top of the box and hit the crossbar, just inches from scoring. Then the Cards got a free kick (from a foul) about 25 yards out and Jaz Shockley stepped up to the ball. She has one of the hardest shots on the team. She went for the net and hit the far post. More bad luck.
With just seconds left in the first half, Brown was fouled in the box and earned a penalty kick. She took it herself and scored. It was 2-1 Wildcats at the break.
Unfortunately, with only 11 minutes left in the game, the Wildcats scored to make it 3-1. You could feel the energy drop in the stands.
The determined Cards pressed high and soon got a breakaway with Kylie Williamson sprinting in from the left side to make it 3-2. It wasn’t over yet.
With only seven minutes left, the Lady Cards battled for possession and some more attacks. The attacks were there, but the Wildcats held on for the Semifinal win. It was one of those games of disappointment, but also being aware of how great a season it was.
The records the team set will be reviewed in a different article.
