An interview was conducted with Head Coach Jason Goth. What he has to say about the team is posted below.
OS: When starting out this season did you think that with the group of boys you had it was in your grasp to achieve first place at the Nutmeg 2023 KC Tournament?
JG: Our team embraced the process of working hard, practicing, and developing our skills to become better athletes and smarter players. We focused on our goals, and we worked together to make them happen. With our solid plan, well-crafted strategies, and exceptional teamwork, we were confident that we had what it takes to come out on top!
OS: Talk about you and your assistant coach, what do you all do to build not only a team bond but an extremely successful club ball team?
JG: Kody Maurer and I are the dynamic duo that makes our team culture positive and fun! We encourage open communication, respect, and unity among our players, while also developing their skills, tactical awareness, and game strategies. It's a winning combination!
OS: What was the goal at the beginning of the season, was it to take the Nutmeg 2023 in KC or less?
JG: Our goal was to help our players become better athletes and people by developing their skills, teamwork, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities. Winning the Nutmeg 2023 tournament was a significant ambition, and we worked hard to get there. We encourage our players to work together, support each other, and overcome obstacles. We're thrilled with the progress they made throughout the season!
OS: What about team morale? Do you have a following besides just parents and direct family of the kids on your team?
JG: Creating a positive and supportive environment is crucial to our team's success. We believe that good team morale is the foundation of this environment, which is why we always strive to build a following amongst fans, the school, and the community to support the team. We also encourage parents and families to be involved and provide constructive feedback and suggestions on how we can improve the team. With everyone working together, we can achieve great things and help our players reach their full potential.
OS: What would you say was the team's hardest battle to overcome this year on or off the field?
JG: We faced a daunting opponent this year, an Oklahoma team that was a regional powerhouse. They had a size and experience advantage over us, which made it challenging for our players. However, our team showed incredible resilience and determination, and we devised a new game plan at halftime to counteract our opponents' strengths. In the end, we executed our tactics with precision and came away with a tie in the final seconds of the match, sending the crowd into a frenzy. This was a testament to our team's hard work and dedication, and we're thrilled with our players' performance.
OS: How long have these athletes played together? What is your main goal for this team?
JG: Most of these players have played together for two to three years now. Our primary goal as a team is to help our players develop a love for the game, maintain a good balance between academics and soccer, and prepare them for high school. We want to ensure that they are technically and tactically skilled enough to compete at a higher level while also supporting their personal development. As they move up into high school, we hope that they will continue to grow and become successful both on and off the field. This is an integral part of our team's philosophy and we're proud to have such a dedicated group of players who embody these values.
OS: What was the team's record this year? Were they undefeated?
JG: We had an amazing year and went 15-1 during our regular season. We also beat teams from 3 different states, and to top it off, we won the 2023 Nutmeg KC Tournament! This was a great accomplishment for our team and we're proud of their hard work and dedication.
OS: Tell me about what drives you to do this for the team? Is it to build better soccer skills, or is there something more behind it?
JG: As a coach, I'm driven by seeing our players grow and achieve success both on and off the field. My goal is to help them become better individuals, develop their leadership skills, and prepare them for life. While soccer skills are important, we also want to instill values that will guide them through future challenges. In addition to this, I believe that a good coach should help their players with cognitive development, so that they can learn to think critically and make better decisions both on and off the field. Coaching this team is more than winning games; it's about helping our players become better individuals in every aspect of their lives.
