Windsor Sports Shorts
Windsor’s winter sports teams wrapped up their seasons last week as the boys and girls basketball teams played in districts, and three wrestlers participated at the State Meet in Columbia.
Boys Basketball: Windsor hosted districts last week and scored a 54-44 win over Holden in the opening round. Three starters scored in double figures as Ryan Millington rang up thirteen points, Rowan Cox had eleven, and Conner Barnes scored ten.
Next up for the Greyhounds was a rematch against Cole Camp. Windsor jumped out to a 10-4 first quarter lead. They held control of the scoreboard even when the Bluebirds put together a fourth quarter run. Windsor won the contest 54-42. Leading the Black & Gold in scoring were Millington (18), Jude Burkhart (12), Cox (11) and Barnes (9)
Last Friday was the district championship against Warsaw with a packed house. The game was a nail biter as the Wildcats held a slim 44-42 lead going into the final frame. Warsaw finished strong and posted a 64-51 victory. Burkhart led Windsor with 18 points followed by Cox (12), Barnes (10), and Millington (9). After a slow start to the season the Greyhounds finished with an 11-14 record.
Girls Basketball: The Lady Hounds ended their season in the first round in their district held at Lone Jack. Warsaw won the game by a 45-30 tally. Dani Ashby and Olsyn Wolfe led Windsor with nine points each. Nevaeh Blythe and Lily Betsworth each grabbed four rebounds. Windsor finished the year with a 9-13 record.
Wrestling: Freshman Kimber Drenon brought home Windsor wrestling’s first state medal last week with a fifth-place finish. Wrestling in the 100-pound class Drenon pinned wrestlers from Marshall, Higginsville, and Lathrop at the meet. She also won a major decision over a contestant from St. Charles. Drenon ended her season with an impressive 46-3 record.
Freshman Nico Punshon wrestled in the 106-pound class and won in a tech fall over a wrestler from Stanberry. Punshon finished with a 24-14 mark. Junior Chase Hampton returned to the State and finished with a 35-6 record.
