Heavenly Treasures
Jesus said, “Do not store up for yourselves treasure on earth where moth and rust destroy, and thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasure in heaven.” (Matthew 6:19– 21)
Gotrocks died and was on his way to heaven. He had been told, “You cannot take it with you.” Still, he thought he would try. There was a mix-up at the pearly gates; and sure enough, Gotrocks got in. After being shown his digs, which he thought rather droll, he stuffed his pockets full of money and took a heavenly stroll. He met an angel and inquired, “Where are the stores? Is there a heavenly mall?”
“We don’t have those here,” the angel said simply. “Here in heaven, everyone has everything they need. There is no reason to shop.”
“But that is hell!” Gotrocks cried.
“Precisely,” the angel responded smiling.
Of course, the story above is fiction. Heavenly treasures will not be earthly like silver and gold. They will be spiritual, i.e., heavenly---like seeing your long-gone family and friends. It might be best to describe these treasures as what they will not be rather than what they will be. There will be no pain, no sorrow, no evil---just goodness and love.
Leslie Weatherhead, a noted theologian, dreamed he died and went to heaven. Standing in a long line before the throne of God, Leslie mentally noted all the questions he had planned to ask God when he got to heaven. As the queue diminished, he set aside numerous inquiries. Just before his turn, he had only two or three questions. When he finally arrived before God’s throne, he discarded all his questions and chose to sit at God’s feet and bask in the presence of our perfect Heavenly Father. Nothing else mattered.
