Charles F. Hinton

Charles F. Hinton, 84, of Clinton, Missouri passed away peacefully at home, April 17, 2023.
He was born on August 6, 1938 in Clinton, Missouri to Earl and Mildred Pauline (Martin) Hinton. Chuck attended elementary school at Deepwater and about 2nd grade transferred to the one room schoolhouse near their farm outside Clinton. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1956 where he played football, acted in school plays, was one of Lester Swaney’s ag students and won a trophy in 1955-56 as CHS Driver of the Year.
After high school, he attended college at Central Missouri State University for one year where his team, the Mules, won the MIAA football title for the first time since 1929. He continued his education at Pittsburg State University, completing his B.S. degree in1961 and then graduate hours. While away at college he was able to continue to use his athletic talent, playing football for the Gorillas. A football injury ended his football career but his team went on to win the 1961 NCAA Division II National Championship.
On August 25, 1962, Chuck was united in marriage to Carol Doughty. Together they moved to Burbank, California. There he taught science and math at McClay Junior High School. In 1965, they returned to Clinton to start a family. It was here that they raised their children, Jennifer and Brant, and made a lifetime of memories.
Once back in Clinton Chuck worked the family farm and partnered with the MU Extension office to share new farming technology and techniques with other farmers. He also taught at Deepwater High and later at Davis R12 and years later substituted at Clinton H.S. in the P.E. Dept.
In 1979 he took part in the American Agriculture Movement and went to Washington D.C. with 1000’s of other farmers to protest low farm prices. In the 80’s he was one of the first in the area to start irrigating his corn fields. In 1981 he took 1st place in the National Corn Growers Association yield contest in the Missouri irrigated division. Later he obtained his real estate license and helped many people find homes and land around the Henry County area.
Chuck enjoyed farming, bird watching, raising tomatoes, watching football and was a long time board member and volunteer at the local animal shelter. He was also a member of the Clinton Christian Church where he served as chair of the property committee for several years.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Hinton; two children, Jennifer Hinton of Clinton and Brant Hinton (Tiffiany) of Harrisonville; a sister, Betty Peckenpaugh of Tucson; five grandchildren, Sarah Smidt (Dane), Miranda Parker (Michael), Skyler Hinton, Blaine Hinton and Jade Hinton; and 7 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were held April 21, 2023 at the Clinton Christian Church with Pastor Tim Wessley officiating. Special music included “Sing Me Back Home, Take Me Home, Country Roads, and God Be With You ‘Till We Meet Again.” The casket bearers were Brant Hinton, Skyler Hinton, Blaine Hinton, Dane Smidt, Steve Austin and Jimmy Phillips. Ted Austin, Bill Ochme, Jim Raysik, Marvin Rhoads, Paul Ross, John Williams and Dr. Syed Hasan, MD were honorary bearers. Interment was in Englewood Cemetery, Clinton, MO.
Services were under the direction of Vansant-Mills Funeral Home of Clinton, MO.
