Welcome to the Good News from Calhoun United Methodist. We ring the church bell at 9:45 to call the “flock” to 10:00 Worship. Contrary to rumors we are alive and well on the Southeast corner of the
Calhoun square. We are a smaller group dedicated to being the hands and feet of Jesus in our
community.
We extend our sympathy and christen love to the family and friends of Gary Mc Keawn who passed into the arms of Jesus this week. Please remember those on our prayer list Patty Dump, Jean Dittmer, Mary George and sons, Robert Bond & wife, Lou Young, Iris Pinkston, Nancy Mountain, Peggy Eshelman,
Sonya Short, Millie Redding, Alma White, Carolina Lane and David Burson. We continue to pray for our military men and women and their families, as well as others in service jobs that we depend upon daily. We pray for guidance as we continue forward as a Christian fellowship on the square in Calhoun, Mo.
Joys to celebrate: Rev. Jackson Short was our speaker today. Special music this morning was “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow,” by Ms. Verna. The tree that fell on Hwy 52 last week near AC totaled two
vehicles before traffic could be stopped, by the grace of God no one was injured. Praise for the much
needed rain. Harvesters Food Drop was well attended Friday serving around 150 families.

youngsters and be prepared to receive a blessing for your effort. We are a Concerned and Praying

The message from Pastor Margie today was from Matthew 15: 10-28. Jesus was not at all concerned about what went into our mouths or what we consumed. It was what came out of our mouths that was important. To speak from our hearts and to convey his loving spirit. There are times when we should be diligent to listen and respond in the way Jesus would want. With a heart free of judgment.
Think about this. It goes way back to the things many of us heard from our parents and grandparents. Not biblical at all. Teaching us to be respectful of our words and considerate to our friends and neighbors.
Lori Rima gave us the gift of song today with the beautiful hymn Amazing Grace/My Chains are gone. Lori blesses us with her voice and spirit that shines bright at Drake’s Chapel.
Kathie Hook, Board Chair, presented some ideas for us to think and pray about at a meeting to be held after church on September 17th. She leads us in growing our spirit and looking for ways to be more like Jesus.
We are looking forward to Grandparents Day on September 10 when we will be bringing our grandchildren... maybe even a grand dog or two to church. Hope you will join us.
We know you will feel His spirit through the love our congregation will show you. Open hearts, open doors, open minds! Please join us any Sunday at 9:00 and if not in person on Facebook live. Just look on Facebook for Margie Briggs. You can find our Chapel 8 miles East of Clinton off Hwy 52.

On Sunday, Pastor Pat Findley delivered the final message in the summer series, ‘Ears to Hear’, titled ‘Parable of the Widow and the Judge’. In this parable in Luke 18:1-8, Jesus tells us that the key to difficulties is prayer by illustrating how a widow who continues asking, never giving up, for justice from an unrighteous judge. Eventually, the judge grants her request because of her persistence. Unlike the judge in the parable, God rules with holy love and true justice, granting requests for selfless reasons. Without God, we’re as helpless as the widow, but in Christ, we are His chosen ones! God is SO good, but this life is sometimes difficult. Like the widow, we are dependent upon Him. Persevering in prayer is vital for our perseverance in the faith. There should be a desperation in our prayers because He delights when we depend on Him. Sometimes we question God’s goodness, but we should be grateful for His patience with us. Keep going, keep trusting, keep praying! When we endure those trials, hang on to the goodness of God! God’s people are protected by God Himself, who will make all things right in the end. God always keeps all of His promises! Don’t underestimate the power of prayer!
Beginning September 17th, Sunday worship service times will change to 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. and Sunday School will then be offered in 3 times slots: 8:15 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Youth and Children’s Ministry will also align with these times. Celebrate Recovery is on Tuesday evenings, beginning at 5:30 p.m., for anyone with hurts, habits and hangups. GriefShare will resume on August 17th to provide help and encouragement after the death of a spouse, child, family member, or friend. So often our lives are too busy. We get caught up in our merry-go-round trying to fulfill our dreams by substituting anything for the true joy that can be found only in Jesus Christ. He cleanses and heals, brings us from despair to hope, nurtures and comforts and leads us to happiness and peace. Take the time to invest in your relationship with Him. The summer sermon series of Faith on Film continued this week with Field of Dreams. Matthew 13: 44 was the scripture choice of Rev. Nancy Gillard for the message. Our handchimes choir played “Sweet Hour of Prayer” as the anthem.
Core Values, a youth bible study that began on August 5, continues. This is an expansion of the wonderful work started at Jesus Camp in July. Students 4th - 7th grades are welcome at 6:30 pm as the “Fruits of the Spirit” are studied. Activities, dinner and songs are a part of each week.
The Presbyterian Women are sponsoring FESTIVAL OF SHARING again this year. Our gifts include a collection of leftover garden seed, outdated prescription glasses, Best Choice Labels and handmade “Blankets of Love”. School supplies are also included in the collection as these will go in the Reading and Writing packs. A display is available in the foyer and our donations are trickling in. Now is the time to pick up school supplies when shopping. We will continue this mission project through Sunday, October 8.
Tai Chi classes meet each Monday and Wednesday at 10:00 am. Tai Chi helps strengthen your core and improve balance. Consider joining.
With the start of a new school year now is the time to begin new habits. Why not include church attendance in that mix? You will find a friendly group of people waiting to make you feel welcome. “Thou Word Have I Hid in My Heart”
Psalm 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
We need to put God’s word in our hearts. Because when the time comes to use it we won’t always have our Bible with us. We do not know what problem awaits us when we answer the phone to the person on the other end.
Jer 36:1-7. (KJV)
The purpose: Maybe the people would turn from their evil ways and turn away from sin. God wants us to turn from our evil ways so he can forgive us.
We preach the mercy of God but we don’t preach the wrath of God. People need to know that they can go to hell and it is for eternity. God‘s word is to get people to turn from their evil ways.
Jer 36:23-28.
You will find that some people do not want to hear the word of God. They should meditate on it. People try to destroy the word of God. This is why we should have his word in our hearts.
The saints aren’t keeping up with the word. Therefore how can the next generation know about Jesus? How can they know about Jesus when people have taken him out of public places?
Here in America, our foundation was built on God. No one should be allowed to come here and remove God from our schools, government, or any other public place. As long as we have Jesus, we are united. When you take Jesus out of all this, the devil slips in and ruination occurs.
The Old Testament is Moses’s law and the New Testament is Apostolic, what Jesus taught the Apostles. Both were written by God.
When the devil is in the church he comes to hinder the speaker and his message.
Amo 7:8-9.
Allow the Lord to lead you to lead you and guide you. You have to have the word of God in you so you know what he is teaching you.
Amo 7:10.
People do not want the word to go out because it corrects them of their wrongdoing. They don’t want God’s truth to be preached. The truth of God’s word should put us back on track when we veer off.
Not everything is about prosperity. The world will try to tell you how to preach. They don’t want to hear the hard words. They will try to tell you not to preach Jesus.
However, we need to preach what God gives us to preach. If those words hurt, then you should get right with God, and they won’t hurt anymore. It is better to get hurt here on earth than to fall into the fire for eternity.
Act 4:13-18. (KJV)
Many times people allow the Devil to scare them, but God needs men and women to speak boldly. Joshua tells us how to hide the word in our hearts.
Joshua 1:8. (KJV)
Meditating day and night allows the word to soak in.
Psa 119:9 BETH. Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed theretoaccording to thy word.
Psa 119:11.
With the word of God, a man can clean his way so he will not sin against God. When you hear the word of God over, and over, and get it in you. When the moment comes for you to apply the word, it comes to you instinctively.
All that Job went through, he was able to endure because he had God’s word hidden in his heart.
Job 23:10-12. (KJV)
Hide his word in your heart to lead you and guide you. God Bless.

Mt. Zion UMC
Trinity, Rockville, and Mt. Zion United Methodist Churches had messages this week entitled Questing For Justice. Specifically, we learned about how Christian justice is different than worldly justice, which was demonstrated through the story of Christ meeting the Canaanite woman on the road to Tyre and Sidon in Matthew 15. Justice, in its ancient definition, is one getting his/her due. More modern understandings are fair treatment or resolution of a situation. Yet, these concepts relate to worldly justice that we would receive equity in outcome based upon an earned merit or punishment. Christian justice remains entirely different from this, as we receive justification (justice) through the waters of baptism, which cleanses original sin. We continue to receive Christ’s justice through the mercy of God that flows from Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. His work upon the cross gives us justice – but it is through mercy we receive grace and justice from God, not of our own merit. The story of the Canaanite woman demonstrates that no one is beyond the reach of Jesus – as she humbled herself before Christ, begged for help, and showed a true faith in God – we too can hope to receive the same justice she asked for upon her knees. Christ will give justice to all who ask for it. And it is our duty and call to bring other to that fount of justice. So go and bring others to that well spring of justice that flows from the throne of grace. We hope that you will come and worship with us! See you soon!
