Mary Lou Whitton, age 83, of Overland Park, KS passed away on Monday, January 29, 2024 at her home.
Mary Lou was born April 4, 1940 in Appleton City, MO, the daughter of Blane and Edna McClellan.
She graduated from Clinton High School in 1958 then married Dwight Whitton. Together they had 5 children. She was a dedicated mother to all of her children.
She devoted her early years of life caring for her children. As her kids grew older she started a new career at Brown Mackie College until retirement. Her career at Brown Mackie helped her create life-long relationships with her co-workers and students.
Mary Lou enjoyed holidays, especially Christmas, Hallmark movies, family traditions, spending time with her family, taking road trips, Elvis Presley, and crafting. She loved caring for her family and making meals for family get-togethers. She loved cheering on her KU Jayhawks basketball team. She devoted her entire life to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and continues to influence their lives through her words of wisdom and lasting memories. Her greatest accomplishment of her life was her family.
She had a strong faith that helped her survive breast cancer. Her faith also helped get her through the hardships she endured throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Blane and Edna McClellan; infant daughter, Angela Whitton; brother, Rick McClellan; and son-in-law, David Spencer.
Mary Lou is survived by her sister: Carol Jo Pogue (Dale) of Independence, MO; sister-in-law: Theresa McClellan of Jefferson City, MO; children: Penny Spencer (Kim Welch) of Butler, MO; Brian Whitton of Overland Park, KS; Darren Whitton (Aimee) of Overland Park, KS; Melanie Bowers (Kyle) of Columbia, MO; grandchildren: Stefanie O’Dell (Michael) of Olathe, KS; Chad Spencer (Sue) of Paola, KS; Nicole Hurtubise (David) of Rocky Mount, MO; Brandon Whitton (Alex) of Overland Park, KS; Jake and Jesse Whitton of Overland Park, KS; Brant, Brady, Megan, and Mallory Bowers of Columbia, MO, and great-grandchildren: Hanna and Ayden O’Dell; Sage and Daphne Fritchle; Adley and Lucy Hurtubise; Quinn and Boone Spencer; and Lucas, Mason and Harper Whitton, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held at Bradley & Hadley Funeral Home in Clinton, MO on Thursday, February 1, 2024 from 5-7:00 p.m. A funeral service was conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 2, 2024 at the funeral home. Burial was held at Englewood Cemetery in Clinton, MO proceeding services.
