Margaret Lou Howerton, 94, of rural Chilhowee, Missouri passed away Thursday, October 12, 2023 at her home. She was born November 18, 1928 in Chilhowee, Mo., the daughter of Hugh Milton Albin and Flora Pearl (Moore) Albin.
Margaret married John Doak “J.D.” Howerton on August 29, 1948 in Chilhowee, Mo. He preceded her in death on April 4, 2009. She was a member of the Daughters of the Americacan Revolution as well as a member of Corinth Baptist Church where she was church clerk for many years as well as a Sunday School and Bible School teacher.
In 1982 she was diagnosed with terminal hairy cell leukemia and given 3 to 6 years to live. She took a single chemotherapy treatment and decided that was not for her. With the power of prayer, bold determination and the help of a nutritionist, Margaret held on until a cure for her cancer was discovered and administered to her in 1998.
Margaret loved her life as a farm wife. Known for her talent for cooking whether it be for just the family, family reunions or for hungry hay crews that annually graced the family table for a number of days each summer. But her greatest love was for her family and displaying her love for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to all of those who graced her home.
She is survived by two sons, John Philip Howerton (Jan), Chilhowee, Mo., and James Mason Howerton (Debbie), Chilhowee, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Nick Howerton, Chilhowee, Mo., Colonel Paul Howerton (Emily), Clinton, Mo., Jill Wood, Jefferson City, Mo., Jennifer Morris (Colonel Aaron Morris), Strangvanger, Norway, Mike Howerton (Heidi), College Grove, Tennessee, Jon Howerton (Stacey), Centerview, Mo. And Andrew Howerton (Melissa), Blairstown, Mo.; 19 great-grandchildren; one brother, John Albin (Margie), Clinton, Mo.; sister-in-law, Carolyn Albin, Otterville, Mo.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Robert Francis Albin and Billy Hugh Albin; and one sister, Mary Sue Rowen.
A Memorial Service will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 26, 2023 at the First Baptist Church of Clinton. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 25, 2023 at the Bradley & Hadley Funeral Home, Clinton. Private family interment will be in the Carrsville Cemetery, Chilhowee, Mo. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Carrsville Cemetery. Donations may be left in care of the funeral home.
