Richard Dean Long, known as Rick, passed away peacefully on January 23 at age 74, surrounded by the warmth of his family.
Rick was born on March 26, 1950, in Clinton, MO, to Roy and Rose Long. A 1968 graduate of Clinton High School, he began his career as a mechanic, working alongside his father at Long’s DX and other stations in Clinton. His passion for mechanics led him to a long career as a heavy diesel mechanic, first with Peabody Coal Co. and later with KC Area Transit, where he retired in 2014 after 28 years of dedicated service.
His passion included building and racing stock cars and spending countless hours on Truman Lake, not just fishing, but guiding others and creating lifelong memories with his closest friends, including his best friend, Russ Hann. Rick was also a proud member of the Bassmaster Club and a member for the Clinton Elks Lodge #1034 and was on the Vansant Road Cemetery Association Board. Rick had many “buddies” wherever he was. There are too many to mention, but you all know who you are.
A mechanic at heart, Rick’s knowledge of engines and tools was unmatched. Whether it was fixing a car, restoring a beloved project, or taking on a new challenge, Rick had a gift for making anything work. He loved his hobbies, particularly the restoration of cars. The one he took most pride in was his GTO, which he brought back to life from a pile of parts. His most recent project, a 1957 Chevy, though left unfinished, was a testament to his enduring passion.
Rick’s greatest joy in life was his family. He was blessed to marry the love of his life, Janet, and together they built a beautiful life. Their love produced two wonderful sons, Jamie and Brian, who brought him immeasurable happiness. Rick’s heart swelled with pride for his granddaughters, Lauryn and Chloe, and the memories they created together will be treasured forever.
Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Rose Long; his brothers Donnie, LeeRoy, and Jerry Long; his sisters Kathy and Peggy, who passed in infancy; and his beloved grandson, Nicholas. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Janet Long; his sons, James (Amanda) Long and Brian Long; and his beautiful granddaughters, Lauryn Long and Chloe Long. He is also survived by his sisters, Linda, Sue, and Robin, his sister-in-law Shirley Long, along with numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom held a special place in his heart.
He was known for his quick wit and his “lead foot,” Above all, Rick’s faith in the Lord gave him strength which served as a foundation for the love he showed to his family and friends.
The family would like to thank St. Croix Hospice for their loving care.
