Vera Lucille Clayton, age 98, passed away on Wednesday, February 26, 2025 at her home in Clinton, Missouri.
Vera “Lucille” Shoemaker Clayton was born February 27, 1926 to Dowdy Shoemaker and Lillie Cooper Shoemaker.
She attended grade school at Chalk Level and Lowry City and high school at Lowry City.
On December 27, 1946 she married Clarence William “Bill” Clayton. They made their home in Lowry City and Appleton City. In 1958 while Bill was employed at Menefee Construction Company, they lived in several towns in southeast Missouri. In 1971 they started Clayton Industries, an asphalt seal coating business in Tulsa, Oklahoma where Lucille worked in the office. They owned and operated the business for 23 years before moving to Clinton in 1994.
She was a member of the Clinton United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Orpha Bray and Elnora Naylor, brother, Glen, husband, Bill, nephews Jim Naylor, Mark Naylor, Kenneth Knight and Phillip McConnell, and niece Cheryl Jackson.
She is survived by nieces, Joyce Bray of Omaha, Nebraska and Cindy Naylor of Lowry City and nephews, Jay Olin Knight of Appleton City and Troy McConnell of Kansas City, beloved caregivers, Sadie Settles, Vina Golightly, Delores Carroll, Sheila Strickland, Becky Moore, Kim Jackson, Janet Wagner and many other relatives and friends.
The family wants to thank Golden Valley Clinic and Dr. Mehra, and his staff for their amazing care. Aunt Lucille loved the Staff and wouldn’t take any additional medicine without asking Dr. Mehra. Dr. Mehra was so compassionate with Aunt Lucille.
We also want to thank Golden Valley Hospice for their amazing care. They treated her with dignity and respect. Hospice helped us with her journey to Heaven.
Funeral services were held February 28, 2025 at the Vansant-Mills Chapel, Clinton with Rev. Monty Stratton officiating. Special music included “In the Garden, How Great Thou Art and When We All Get To Heaven.” The casket bearers were Jeremy Thomason, Ryan Naylor, Robert Naylor and Ryan Wagner. Interment followed in Lowry City Cemetery, Lowry City, MO.
Services were under the direction of Vansant-Mills Funeral Home of Clinton, MO.
