The American Legion Post 305 had good community support with their annual Ice Cream supper, Sunday evening, August 25.
To whet the attendees cravings, Son of the Legion member, Bill Viebrock, roasted hot dogs close to the pathway. The aroma must have worked because he was hard pressed to stay ahead of the appetites for awhile.
The food line inside was busy handing out the “dogs” and replenishing the slices of desserts that accompanied the large scoops of ice cream; while Fred Kennedy, on guitar, performed decades old country music, mixed with gospel tunes such as I’ll Fly Away. All to the buzz of attendees visiting and enjoying a nice Sunday evening in small town America.
The American Legion is a staple in Cole Camp and is 104 years old in 2024. It was originally organized in 1920 by ex-servicemen from WWI. At first they had no building or place of their own but slowly over the years, with the diligence of its members and the support of the community, they grew and became what they are today.
The Legion has always given so much back to the community and they are a familiar sight each Memorial Day as they make the rounds of the local cemeteries and honor the fallen with a ceremony of respect for their service. The local community is proud of each and every one of their members, past and present.
