John W. Calhoun, age 73, passed away on Sunday, December 18, 2022 at Clinton Healthcare & Rehab. Center in Clinton, Missouri.
John William Calhoun, 73, son of John Adcock Calhoun and Helen Gertrude Brown Calhoun, was born April 4, 1949 in Butler, Missouri.
John W. Calhoun graduated from Montrose High School in 1967 and received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Missouri at Columbia, Missouri in 1971. He was a member of the United Presbyterian-Methodist Church in Montrose. He worked with his father, John A. Calhoun, at the family’s Calhoun Hatchery, farm and mill for many years. John then worked as a rural mail carrier for several years. He was very business-minded and enjoyed helping people with their taxes from his home office.
John was a Boy Scout member, a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say, and a member of the Montrose Activity Club (MAC). He served on the Montrose City Council and Montrose Cemetery board for several years. He mostly enjoyed volunteering in the community and spending time with his friends and family.
John was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jim Calhoun.
He is survived by his sisters Carolyn Walker and husband, Norman, of Warrensburg, Missouri and Betty Lane and husband, Robert, of Clinton, Missouri; seven nephews and nieces, Steven Walker and wife, Marietta, of Warrensburg, Missouri, Julia McCaffree and husband, Mike, of Nevada, Missouri, John Lane of Columbia, Missouri, Susan Boden and husband, Wayne, of Clinton, Missouri, Judy Ulshafer, and husband, Michael, of Caro, Michigan, Betty Aardema of Springboro, Ohio and James Calhoun of Caro, Michigan; eleven great-nephews and nieces Caleb Thorns and wife, Amy, of Higginsville, Missouri, Shelby Thorns of Springfield, Missouri, Maddie, Carlie and Allie McCaffree all of Nevada, Missouri, Zach Lane of Clinton, Missouri, Callie, Jackson and Makenzie DeCorte all of Caro, Michigan, Austin Aardema of Springboro, Ohio, Tyler Calhoun of Greenville, Michigan; four step-great-nephews and nieces, Bradley Chambers and Shannon Moore both of Warrensburg, Missouri, Hannah Boden of Mount Dora, Florida, Harrison Boden of Lawrence, Kansas; and two great-great-nephews Maddox and Oliver Thorns of Higginsville, Missouri.
Funeral services were held December 26, 2022 at the Vansant-Mills Chapel, Clinton with Rev. David Mills officiating. Special music included “On Eagles Wings and Amazing Grace.” The casket bearers were Zach Lane, Wayne Roden, Caleb Thorns, John Lane, Norman Bellinghausen and Maddox Thorns. Interment followed in Montrose Cemetery, Montrose, MO.
Services were under the direction of Vansant-Mills Funeral Home of Clinton, MO.
