Twilight Garden Club Announces June Yard Of The Month

Posted

Twilight Garden Club is pleased to announce that Ted and Amy Weaver’s yard has been named June Yard of the Month. Ted and Amy have lived at 711 Verna for 32 years. The gardens and yard are a team effort. Ted said that Amy is the idea person and he is her helper. But Amy stated that Ted does all the mowing and trimming. Together, they make their yard attractive!
Amy told us that she gives credit to Darlene Glaspy for her inspiration for gardening. Darlene has given her many plants and advice on where to plant and how to care for the gardens over the years. She also gives credit to her Grandmother Cora Glaspy, as she was a lover of all things gardening. Amy even has some of Grandma Glaspy’s hen and chicks in one bed.
All of the beds are lined with rocks that they have collected from their farm. Amy said Ted brings any he finds and she finds a place to put them. There is a circular bed in the middle of the front yard with tall garden phlox, vinca – coral, red, purple and pink, hosta and a climbing cardinal plant on an old metal wheel.
In the middle of the bed is a large sandstone rock with their last name engraved into it. Also, something special and important to Ted, is the flag pole with the American flag. Ted served in the
United States Army, 82nd Airborne Division from Dec. 1969 – Nov. 1970. Adding to the patriotic theme, are all of the 4th of July decorations incorporated into the beds.
On the south side of the yard is a magnolia tree. Amy told a story about her dad (the late Dr. Clint Glaspy) giving her a magnolia, of which she was thrilled. Ted thought he would help with some weed control and sprayed everything, assuring Amy that it would not hurt anything but the weeds….but he was wrong, it killed the magnolia. But he replaced it with another in remembrance of Amy’s dad. She said it holds a special place in her heart, not only for the reminder of her dad, but that Ted bought this one for her.
Close to the street there is a bed that has lantana as well as vinca and marigolds. Amy stated that the lantana will take over the bed before the summer is over. Amy loves garden art, and she displays a variety in all the beds.
The porch has some of her house plants and ferns. The bed in front of the porch has a cement bench surrounded by a pot of marigolds, a climbing rose, portulaca and hosta. To the south of the porch there is a chartreuse maple tree, garden art, including a bird bath, and pots of blooming plants. You can see an azalea peeking out from the south side of the house that was a gift from Cletus Woods. To the north of the porch in the bed is a japanese maple, that they thought would not get very big, but it apparently likes where they planted it! At the north end of the bed is a bubbler fountain surrounded by english ivy and sedum. Congratulations to Ted and Amy Weaver!
