Calhoun Community Church
Welcome to the Good News from Calhoun Community Church. Our church family gathers at 9:30 a.m. for pre- church food and fellowship. We use this special time for visiting one with another, welcoming guests as they arrive for Worship, and signing cards of encouragement for our card ministry. We ring the church bell at 9:45 to call our church families to worship at 10:00.
Our Sympathy and Christian love are extended to the family and friends of Larry Cox who passed into the arms of Jesus this weekend. Others on our prayer list include: Paul Diaz’s father, Debby and Clint Land, Sondra Short, Millie Redding, Amber and Patrick Dittmer and Brecklynn, and Dave Burson. Prayers for less violence in our world and an end to the tension caused by political differences, our military men and women and their families, as well as others in service jobs that we depend upon daily. We pray for guidance as we continue to grow, here on the southeast corner of the Calhoun square.
Joys to celebrate: We look forward to gathering at the “little church” on the Calhoun Square each Sunday morning. We are enjoying the cooler weather this week. Carol Lane shared butter scotch oatmeal cookies for pre-church fellowship this morning. Brylee and Kendall Keller lit the altar candles at the beginning of our service today. Special Music: “Jesus Loves Me, Still” shared by Shelby Bicknell. Pastor Short remarked had a wonderful trip to Los Vegas to visit his sister and family and the experience he had because of the computer shut down. Brylee and Kendall served as ushers collecting the offering this morning before going downstairs for Sunday school. We are a diverse group here at Calhoun Community Church. We try to have a little fun as well as Praise the Lord during our church experience. The Hymn “Blest Be the Tie That Binds” sums up the spirit of those who regularly attend Calhoun Community Church. In that spirit we would invite you to be our guest any Sunday morning at 10:00, come dressed as you are comfortable, and be prepared to receive a hug and a blessing for your effort. Bring the youngsters along and we will be blessed to have you.

On Sunday, special guest Pastor Kevin Cottrell gave a message titled ‘God’s Will For Us In Frustrating Times’. In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Paul speaks to the church in the midst of hard times and persecution, encouraging them to praise and rejoice always. As Christians, our joy is not based on our external circumstances, but on our identity in Christ and our growing relationship with Him. When disaster strikes, remember who you are. Remember what God has done for you. We have all sinned and failed God, but He loves us so much that He sent His Son to pay the price for our sins. Remember what God has promised. When we repent and confess that Jesus is Lord, we are saved. Remember to pray continually. Prayer should be alive and ever-flowing in our personal walk and relationship with Christ. God has called us to a life of service, to be witnesses, and His gift of prayer should be a major part of our lives. Quiet time with God is a beautiful thing, aligning our hearts with His, but we can continually stay connected throughout our day. Keep your eyes on Jesus. Through the Word of God, the Holy Spirit will illuminate the truth and expose the lies. If you find yourself frustrated, remember the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ. You are a child of the King of Kings!

This year’s Vacation Bible School was a huge success! A big thank you and debt of gratitude is owed to the following individuals who made it all happen for the kids who participated: Russ, Katrina, and Ian Bergman; Timothy Knoernschild; Edith Lawler; Brian, Kendra, and Loralei Loman; Carmen and Nolan Rathert; Hope Seider; Valerie and Regina Smith; Emily and Kynlee Stocking; and Bonnie, Janna, and Lilyan Viebrock. Thank you, everyone!
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, and not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the day drawing near.” (Hebrews 10:24-25).
If you’re a Christian, you should be a member of a Christian church where the Gospel is preached and the sacraments are administered rightly. A sincere believer will join a church, and attend services regularly. Why wouldn’t they? Church attendance is one important mark of being a believer.. A Christian who never attends church is an oxymoron.
Martin Luther often spoke about how Christians should be “little Christs” to their neighbors. Luther said the primary way Christians witness to others about their faith in Jesus Christ is how they live their lives as they go about their daily activities. Regular church attendance is an important part of a Christian’s witness to others. It’s important because it not only strengthens our own faith, but is a faithful witness and encouragement for others to do the same.
Come to church this Sunday. Your faith will be nourished and strengthened, as will the faith of everyone else gathered together there to worship the triune God in spirit and in truth. Hallelujah!

It was a beautiful day as the faithful gathered to worship the Lord. Clint Keeney rang the church bell. Mrs. Julia Klinefelter led in the congregational singing with Mrs. Dixie Collins playing piano. We rejoiced and celebrated with the VBS children as they shared a special song with the congregation. Lonny Bramell and Randy Vogt collected the offering.
The scripture passage from Pastor Joshua Sowell’s sermon was from Romans 7:14-25.
Paul reminds us to seek, study, and follow God’s laws. Through faith in Jesus our Savior, we should desire to show love, be kind, be tenderhearted, forgive, and be honest as the Holy Spirit gives us strength against the forces of sin. Christ will bless us in this life and for eternity. Have a blessed week.

Because of your promise, I believe.
Eternal God, who created the heavens and earth, giving breath to every living thing, we thank you for all the gifts of creation and for the gift of life itself. We thank you for making us in your own image, forgiving us when we act as though you have no claim on us and for keeping us in your steadfast care.
It was great to see our newest Valley Center family member in church this morning! Two week old Lauson Denison joined us with his two brothers and his mom and dad.
We send our prayers of love and peace for the family of our dear church member, Dara Gilkey Bigler, who passed away suddenly this week. She was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be missed.
We invited all to come and join us for Holy Communion this morning. Consistory Board Elders Andy Lasswell and Dylan Wirsig were servers.
Jesus is the Good Shepherd who gathers, invites, protects and cares for his sheep. He calls each of us and His power enables us to respond to the gospel of Jesus Christ.
As we look at our lives today, we say yes to opportunities to share words of encouragement, to help others and really see them and respond to their needs. But sometimes we just say no when we get impatient and exclude people around us. They become invisible. So many times their needs get lost to us and it becomes too easy to just turn away
But, Jesus wants us, all of us to follow him and to say yes. Yes we will not exclude anyone. Yes, we will invite all to his table and into his house. Yes, we will love and not divide and yes we are ready to be his good shepherds.
We stand as witnesses to his love and justice. We glorify his name.
