Calhoun Colt Show Union Church News September 8, 2024
Fifty folk from the Calhoun Community Area Churches came together for a Union Church service Sunday during our Annual Calhoun Colt Show in the Stage Area behind the City Hall Building in the center of the square. Those participating were Calhoun Baptist, Mt. Mariah Church, Mt Olivet Baptist, and Calhoun Community Church.
The service began at 10:30 a.m. with Janet Hall and Rev. Joe Hall sharing favorite musical selections as we prepared our hearts for the service at 11:00. At 10:45 the church bell at Calhoun Community Church was rung to call the community to worship. Tom Colwell served as liturgist with Rev. Jackson Short of Calhoun Community Church opening the service with prayer. For Special music “God Bless the U.S. A.” by Mr. Lee Greenwood was played on C.D. The whole group stood with hands over our hearts during the song with many singing along. “God Bless the U.S.A.” is a very touching song for many Americans. Rev. Joe Hall of Mt. Mariah Church was in charge of the Children’s Message; talking to them about being the salt of the earth and presenting them each with a Bible.
An offering of $400.25 was most generously given by those in attendance. The quarter was found on the ground while cleaning up. This money will be donated to the Monaco Behavioral Center, Brittney
(Briggs) Monaco recently opened here in Calhoun. The goal of this school is to help youngsters with behavior problems and disabilities become successful students.
Mr. David Nicholas placed fresh tomatoes, water melons, peppers and zucchini and Calhoun Community Church a container of Cinnamon Rolls out front to share. Thanks for your generosity.
Rev. Jim Heim of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church gave an excellent message about the importance of community and everyone working together being the hands and feet of Jesus. Our nation was founded on a religious foundation which is quickly slipping away.
Hymns sung during the service were “We Gather Together,” “Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus,” “In the Garden,” “America the Beautiful,” and” God Be With You Till We Meet Again”.
An Altar Call was offered with the Pastors standing in front of the stage as Tom Colwell sang “Living for

On Sunday, Steve and Debbie Wilson of Dallas, TX delivered a message titled ‘Expectations: How to Communicate and Connect the Dots’. We all have expectations that affect our loved ones. Unspoken expectations lead to disappointment. God loves us enough to gently remind us to appreciate who are loved ones are, rather than who we want them to be. God will always call us to love well. Unmet expectations will always lead to division. Be high on
affirmations and low on criticism because everyone needs a win. We are all in need of value. If Jesus lives in your life, He has called you to be an encourager. Try meeting your loved ones halfway, and be the one that builds them up, honoring their value and letting them meet your expectations. Unrealistic expectations will always lead to defeat. The world will give us unrealistic expectations, but God calls us to love. God is proud of you! Allow Jesus into your heart. His grace is sufficient!

On January 22, 1924 the corner stone was laid for the brick building known today as irst Presbyterian Church. February 27, 1926 marked the building’s completion and the first worship service was held in the newly built sanctuary. This past Sunday, September 8, saw our congregation celebrating 100 years at the present location. A fried chicken dinner with lots of delicious side dishes and wonderful fellowship was enjoyed after worship service to celebrate this remarkable event. There were plenty of pictures, documents, etc. for everyone to browse through and reminisce about. Our choir sang “We Are a Church” and Rev. Nancy Gillard delivered the message Faithfully Facing the Future with Ephesians 6: 10 – 14 as her text.
Designated baskets for the Festival of Sharing donations continues with an increasingly impressive display of donated items. Haven’t donated yet? No worries as collection continues through October 6. Garden seed for community gardens, old prescription glasses and Best Choice Labels are among items requested. If you prefer to donate school supplies there is a list of needed items on the table display in the foyer. If you haven’t had the opportunity to donate, time is on your side.
Tai Chi classes are great exercise and continue on Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:00 am. Strengthen your core and improve your balance.

“If we say we have no sins, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and His word is not in us.” 1 John 8-9.
Each Sunday, the Divine Service begins with the congregation confessing their sinfulness, and receiving absolution for their sins from God through the Pastor’s words, as follows.
The congregation says:
“Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.”
The Pastor then responds:
“Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father, Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
Yes, yet another ancient version of the Sinner’s Prayer. Through confession and absolution proclaimed each Sunday in the Divine Service, Christians down through the centuries have announced and declared their faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, and received God’s blessing and forgiveness for their sins unto life everlasting. Amen.
“So when the devil throws your sins in your face and declares that you deserve death and hell, tell him this: “I admit that I deserve death and hell, what of it? For I know One who suffered and made satisfaction on my behalf. His name is Jesus Christ, Son of God, and where He is, there I shall be also!” Martin Luther.

Sunshine brightened our day as we gathered for worship service. Clint Keeney rang the church bell. Mrs. Julia Klinefelter led in the congregational singing with Mrs. Dixie Collins playing piano and Mrs. Rebecca Sowell playing violin. We rejoiced with Michael Klinefelter and Mick Vogt on their birthdays. Randy Vogt and Clint Keeney collected the offering.
Steve Sowell filled in for his son Pastor Joshua Sowell. The scripture passage from his sermon was from Psalm 85. Through our love and faith in Christ, we should practice forgiveness, show gratitude, and pray. When we follow and abide in Him, He promises peace and eternal salvation. Wherever the Lord leads us, He will prepare our path.
Share some love and kindness this week.

We thank you for the glorious gift of his grace and we pray that we will shine His light and love to all others.
We are an open and affirming church and welcome everyone to come next Sunday and worship with us at 9 am.
We send our love and prayers to Sandy Smith who passed away this week. She was a faithful church member. She will be sorely missed. Her visitation will be at 12 o’clock at the Valley Center Church with the funeral service beginning at 1:00.
We continue our plans for our annual Valley Center Oktoberfest that will be held on October 19th, with serving from 3:00-8-00. Our members always look forward to this event and seeing old friends again! It promises to be a fun and delicious evening!
We thank Dr. David Maggi who gave the message this morning in absence of Rev. Dane. Isaac Neuenschwander lit the altar candles to begin our worship service. The congregation sang, “My Hope is Built on Nothing Else.
God doesn’t stay in the lines that we draw. We often draw them just where we want them to be. But you can’t draw a line around God. So many times we like to think that we are in control and have everything figured out. We seek to do just what we want to do and still feel like we are good enough to get into Heaven. It is not about what good we do or what we do, it is all about God’s forgiveness.
So, what does God do with us and our sins? It is simple really, God loves us and forgives us. He knows that this is the only way to rid us of our sin. No matter what we do or say and no matter what others may think about us and our actions, it is God who forgives each of us with his love, mercy and grace.
Most things in life we have to earn, except for our salvation. It is given freely by the one who loves us more than our sins. Those lines that we draw are wiped away so that we will go out and bring his light into the world.
We are all God’s children and he loves us forever and always.
